Archive for the ‘Shepherds’ Category

I expect already that some readers conclude that I’ve tried to diminish the role of elders, pastors, shepherds, etc. and therefore, I’m a heretic. Some might also be inclined to think I’m anti-elder or anti-leadership.

These things are just not true.

Paul tells us in Ephesians 4 that Christ gave some to be apostles, prophets, pastors (shepherds), teachers, evangelists. I am glad that Christ gave shepherds to the local church. I’m glad when there are functioning elders doing the work that they’re exhorted to do.

What I am against is any attempt to elevate one of the above roles to any level that is above other saints, or in any way seeks to interfere with Christ’s relationship to the saints. I don’t mean to imply that there are no distinctions, or that those who serve in some roles are not worthy of being respected for such. There is a fine line between respecting someone for their contribution to the Body, and setting them apart as being above the rest of the Body.

Therefore, though I’ve been critical of many forms of unscriptural ‘leadership’, I’m by no means critical of true shepherding (John 10).

Honestly, I wish I could say I’ve seen more of it than I’ve actually witnessed in nearly three decades of walking with Yeshua. It’s desperately needed. I believe the shepherds and elders are present in the body, but many false ideas and notions we have about such things cause these saints to be sidelined and silenced meanwhile allowing every manner of unscriptural, controlling, manipulative, and wrongful systems to fill the voids. Many unwise, unloving, and non-qualified persons occupy roles they should not – simply by self-appointment, or as a result of having an ‘education’ in such areas.

Brethren, these things should not be so. The body of Christ needs these gifts and abilities more than ever. I pray that those reading this site will deeply consider their own part. Repent where repentance is needed, take action where action is needed.

In the meantime, you’re welcome to consider me a heretic if you like.
